Why did the pigeon cross the road?

I was driving to a doctor’s appointment today and was stopped at a red light, when I saw a pigeon crossing the street alongside a couple of pedestrians. The people didn’t see the little bird, but he made his way slowly, walking across the street on the zebra lines. Once he made it across the street, he stopped at the corner and looked across at the small perpendicular side street. He waited until some cars had gone and then started to cross that one, too. When he was finally across the second street, he started pecking furiously at something I couldn’t see. He looked so silly doing all of this that it me laugh.
