The Book Thief


I wasn’t sure at first what to think about this book because I found it quite boring for the first 2/3 of the way, but for the whole last 1/3 I found myself 1)mad at the author 2)incredibly in love with the characters 3) sobbing uncontrollably. But even while I was bored I had to concede that the writing itself was brilliant; he has such weird, interesting, images. Some examples: “Rain like gray pencil shavings” and “Rosa had a small rip beneath her right eye, and within the minute, her cardboard face was broken. Not down the center, but to the right. It gnarled down her cheek in an arc, finishing at her chin.” Wow. I found myself stopping over sentences and considering them at length.
