The Forsyte Saga

The Forsyte SagaYes, it’s another TV show related blog post. :) I’ve really been enjoying The Forsyte Saga on Netflix. Based on a series of novels by Nobel Prize winning author John Galsworthy, the miniseries follows the love affairs and scandals of a rich family in Victorian England. As the family grows, time passes and historical events affect the family. It’s pretty juicy and dramatic, though slightly predictable now and then.

According to reviews online, the miniseries isn’t very faithful to the novels, but it has made me wonder why I’ve never heard of them before. Has anyone read the books? What did you think?

  1. I have copies around the house somewhere, but I haven’t read much of them. (I’m always losing books.) If you’re curious, I’m pretty sure there’s a PD copy in the Kindle store.

What do you like about the series? Does it remind you of any other series?

It has many multi-faceted characters and broaches serious topics such as rape and prostitution in the victorian era, but balanced with juicy plot twists and romance. I wonder how similar the book is and whether it is written in a way that a modern reader would enjoy it. Who knows when I’ll get around to reading it though!

I have read it and just finished reading the second series in the saga too. I read the first trilogy before seeing the mini-series. I loved both. Yes, there were some plot differences but that’s to be expected and the overall themes, characters, etc. were all there.

Sounds like it might be worth it then!
